Private Autism / ASD Assessment for Adults & Adolescents (UK)
Enquire for full pathway details, package options, and fees confirmed after triage.
Tools may include: ADI-R · ADOS-2 · AQ-50 · CAT-Q
Private autism assessments are often sought at a turning point: when masking stops working, when burnout arrives, when education or employment demands expose hidden costs, or when a person simply wants a coherent explanation that fits their real sensory, social, and cognitive experience — not a narrow or stereotype-led interpretation.
Neurodiverse You takes a neuroaffirming stance without lowering clinical standards. Formulation is grounded in recognised diagnostic frameworks and gold-standard tools where clinically indicated — including ADI-R-informed interviewing and, in higher packages, in-person ADOS-2 assessment when that adds meaningful evidence for your age and presentation. We explain what each element contributes so consent stays informed, especially when observation requires travel to an associate clinic location.
We recognise that many autistic people — particularly women, women of colour, Black and racially minoritised people, non-binary people, late-diagnosed adults, and those who learned early to camouflage — have been told they “do not look autistic.” Our assessments attend to subtle presentations: social effort that drains for hours afterwards, sensory intensity that looks like mood instability, rigidity that is actually regulation, and strengths (pattern recognition, loyalty, deep focus) that can obscure support needs until capacity drops.
Our autism assessment packages allow us to match the pathway to your needs. Some people require a focused diagnostic assessment, while others need a more detailed formulation involving developmental history, informant input, ADOS-2, multidisciplinary contribution, or additional reporting. Adolescent pathways, including autism assessment for teenagers aged 14–17, reflect additional developmental considerations and appropriate informant involvement.
Reports are written to be useful in life — including autism diagnosis reports for GPs, schools, colleges, universities, and employers, alongside reasonable adjustments conversations — while staying clinically careful about conclusions that must hold under scrutiny. Where ADHD, AuDHD, or other conditions may co-occur, we discuss staging and cross-links rather than forcing a single-session oversimplification.
If you are weighing whether a private ASD assessment is right for you (or for an adolescent you parent), begin with enquiry and triage. We will outline realistic timelines, fees, suitability, and what each autism assessment pathway includes before you commit.
Autism, sometimes diagnosed as Autism Spectrum Disorder / ASD, is a developmental difference in how a person perceives, processes, responds to, and makes sense of the world. This can affect communication, social energy, sensory experience, routines, flexibility, emotional regulation, and everyday functioning.
Many adults and young people come to us after years of masking, misunderstanding, exhaustion, anxiety, or burnout. At NDY, we offer careful, evidence-based autism assessments that look beyond stereotypes and help build a formulation that fits the person's real life.
Does this feel familiar?
-
Social situations may take more effort than they seem to for others. You may rehearse, monitor yourself, analyse afterwards, or feel drained once the interaction is over.
-
You may find it difficult to work out unspoken expectations, indirect communication, tone, facial expression, or body language — especially when people do not say clearly what they mean.
-
Bright lights, background noise, certain textures, or strong smells feel intense, distracting, or physically uncomfortable.
-
Unfamiliar places, transitions, or busy environments may increase anxiety. You may need more time to settle, orient yourself, or recover afterwards.
-
You need more time to process spoken information, instructions, or sudden changes — especially when several things happen at once.
-
Routines, predictability, familiar systems, or deep interests may help you feel regulated, focused, prepared, or safe.
-
You notice patterns, details, or systems others skim past — sometimes it helps you excel; sometimes it is hard to switch off.
-
You may use repeated actions, thoughts, routines, movements, or rituals to soothe, organise, focus, or cope — even if others do not always understand why.
-
You have learned to mask or camouflage at school, work, or socially — and it leaves you exhausted, burnt out, or misunderstood.
-
You may find it hard to notice internal body signals — such as hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, or fatigue — until they become intense or difficult to ignore.
These experiences do not confirm autism or ASD on their own, and not every autistic person will relate to every point. A full assessment helps us understand your developmental history, current functioning, strengths, challenges, context, and whether autism or another explanation best fits your profile.
What to expect from your assessment
Autism assessment brings together screening, a structured developmental interview, and (where included in your package) in-person observation — then formulation against recognised criteria. Some steps vary by package — see the badges on each step.
-
Step 01
Initial screening
We review screening information to see whether an autism-focused assessment is appropriate, answer your questions, and plan next steps safely. Adults often start with measures such as the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ-50).
-
Step 02
Validated screening questionnaires
You complete standardised self-report measures (for example AQ-50 and CAT-Q where indicated), and a pre-interview questionnaire from a primary informant where relevant — so we understand strengths, differences, and day-to-day impact.
-
Step 03
Clinical interview (ADI-R informed)
An in-depth interview explores developmental history and current presentation — communication, social reciprocity, interests, sensory experience, and routines. This appointment is typically held online and uses ADI-R principles to guide the conversation.
-
Step 04
Full ADI-R informant interview
Comprehensive+Using the Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised (ADI-R), we explore developmental history and current presentation with structured, gold-standard depth. This session usually lasts around two to three hours and is conducted online.
-
Step 05
ADOS-2 observation (in person)
Enhanced+Where included in your package, we use the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) — structured activities and conversation tailored to your age — completed face to face at one of our associate clinic locations (module appropriate to age).
-
Step 06
Psychiatrist consultation
Multidisciplinary+At this package level, you also meet directly with a consultant psychiatrist as part of the wider multidisciplinary pathway. They will consider relevant background information and contribute their specialist perspective to the overall formulation, alongside the psychological assessment.
-
Step 07
Diagnostic formulation & report
We integrate all information and consider findings alongside DSM-5 criteria. You receive a full written report; higher packages may add an educational summary, professional summary, and psychiatrist report as described in your package.
-
Step 08
Feedback session
Comprehensive+We meet with you (and significant others if appropriate) to discuss findings, recommendations, and next steps — including support, adjustments, or further assessment if needed.
-
Optional
Cognitive and sensory profiling
Where clinically helpful, we add structured exploration of cognitive profile and sensory processing differences to clarify strengths, needs, and reasonable adjustments — by clinical indication or on request.
-
Optional
Differential diagnosis review
Many conditions can overlap with or mimic autistic presentation (for example anxiety, ADHD, trauma-related difficulties). We evaluate alternatives carefully so any conclusion is accurate and useful to you.

What affects the price
- Package depth — Core through Most comprehensive add successively more (full ADI-R, feedback meeting, in-person ADOS-2, psychiatrist consultation, post-diagnostic support sessions).
- Age band — Adolescent pathways include additional informant and educational-report work and are priced slightly higher than adult equivalents.
- In-person ADOS-2 — Enhanced and above include structured observation at an associate clinic; that affects total cost compared with interview-only packages.
- Optional add-ons — Workplace or school and educational reports, ADHD coaching, and parent guidance are priced separately.
- Clinician mix — Pathways that include a consultant psychiatrist consultation are priced above the core clinician-led assessment.
Final fees are confirmed at triage, once we know which package and add-ons fit your situation.

Common questions
How much does a private autism assessment cost?
Our adult autism packages start at £1,050 (Core) and range up to £2,650 (Most comprehensive). Adolescent pathways start at £1,300 and go up to £2,900. Most clients choose Comprehensive (from £1,450), which adds the full ADI-R, a feedback meeting, and an educational summary. Enhanced and above include in-person ADOS-2. Final fees are confirmed at triage.
Is a private autism assessment legitimate, and will my GP accept it?
We follow recognised diagnostic frameworks and use validated tools with qualified practitioners. Reports are written to a high standard; many clients share them with their GP or education provider. Uptake can vary by practice — we are happy to discuss what to expect when you enquire.
Do I need an ADOS-2 to get an autism diagnosis?
Not always. Assessment should be based on a coherent formulation using multiple sources of information. Our packages differ in depth: Core and Comprehensive focus on interview-based evidence; Enhanced and above add in-person ADOS-2 where clinically indicated and included in your package. We will recommend the pathway that matches your presentation and the package you choose.
What is the difference between Core, Comprehensive, Enhanced, and Multidisciplinary?
Core includes screening, questionnaires, an ADI-R-informed clinical interview, diagnostic evaluation, and a full report. Comprehensive adds the complete ADI-R with a full informant interview, a formal feedback meeting, and dual reporting. Enhanced adds in-person ADOS-2 and triple reporting including a psychiatrist report contribution. Multidisciplinary adds a consultant psychiatrist consultation as part of the multidisciplinary pathway and further reporting options for complex presentations. Compare features and prices in the packages above.
Will I need a parent, partner, or other informant to take part?
Informant input strengthens developmental history and cross-setting picture, especially for the full ADI-R at Comprehensive and above. We will discuss who is appropriate (for example a parent, partner, or someone who knows you well) and obtain consent. If an informant cannot take part, we will discuss what is still possible.
Is the assessment online or in person?
Screening and ADI-R-related appointments are typically online. ADOS-2, where included, is in person at an associate clinic location. Some elements may be adapted in individual cases — we confirm delivery at triage.
How long does the whole assessment take, end to end?
Timelines vary by package, informant availability, and clinic dates for ADOS-2 where included. After screening, you will receive a clearer estimate. We aim to keep you informed at each stage.
Can I be assessed for both autism and ADHD?
Yes — many people explore both. We offer a combined ADHD and autism (AuDHD) pathway where that fits your needs; see our combined assessment service or mention it when you enquire.
What happens if you conclude I'm not autistic?
You still receive a clear account of what we observed, what was considered, and practical next steps — which might include support for anxiety or ADHD, signposting, or further assessment. The goal is clarity that helps you move forward.
Locations we serve
Associate clinicians work across the UK. ADHD assessments are often delivered online nationwide; autism pathways may include in-person options depending on location. Explore location guides below — final arrangements are confirmed after triage.
